What Size Gown Should I Rent?
Why adjustable sizing changes everything—and why the number on a clothing tag may be the least useful place to start.

“She usually wears a size 6” isn't enough.
Two children who both wear a size 6 in everyday clothing can have completely different measurements.
One may be taller with a longer torso. Another may have a fuller chest and shorter waist. One may need additional skirt length while another needs the bodice raised.
Age and retail size labels can give us a general starting point, but they don't tell us where the waist sits, how long the torso is, or how a finished couture gown will fall on the body.
That's why we prefer to start with the wearer's actual current measurements.

Measurements tell us what a size label can't.
For many rental gowns, chest or bust, natural waist and the relevant length are the first measurements to compare.
Chest / Bust
Measure around the fullest part of the chest or bust. Keep the tape level and comfortably close to the body.
Natural Waist
Measure around the natural waist. This helps us understand where the gown's bodice and skirt should meet on the wearer.
Length
Height alone isn't enough. Depending on the gown, torso, waist-to-floor or another listed length may determine where the finished skirt actually lands.
Measure Before You Reserve
Five minutes now can make gown selection much easier.
Use a soft measuring tape and take true current measurements over close-fitting clothing.
- Keep the measuring tape level.
- Do not add extra inches yourself.
- Measure twice if a number seems unusual.
- Write down the actual measurement.
- Remeasure growing children and teens.
The gown's measurements tell the real story.

Should I rent the same size my child normally wears?
Not automatically. Start with the wearer's current measurements and compare them with the exact measurements listed for the specific rental gown.
What measurements are most important?
Chest or bust, natural waist and relevant length are often the first measurements to compare. Some fitted silhouettes may require additional measurements such as hips.
Can one rental gown fit more than one traditional size?
Many can. Depending on the design, adjustable shoulder ties, elastic construction or corset-style backs can create more fit flexibility than a rigid retail garment.
Does every elastic-back gown stretch the same amount?
No. Construction varies by gown, which is why the exact measurements and fit notes for the individual rental should always be your guide.
What about structured or fixed bodices?
Structured styles may have little or no stretch and should be selected carefully using their exact listed measurements.
